The great citadel of Caernarfon was built between 1285 and 1322 by Edward I and overshadows the town completely. Although now only a shell, it is perfect. The Castle was held by Parliament in the Civil War and in 1660 a writ of Parliament was issued for it to be destroyed, but fortunately this was not carried out. The Castle is best-known as the site of the proclamation of the Prince of Wales, the first such being for the son of Edward I in 1301.
The town itself is a market centre for North Wales and Angelsey. After time to see the Castle at Caernarfon, by way of the delightful Vale of Llanberis with the great Snowdon towering above the village, attractively situated at the tip of the lake.
